Etisalat wins 2016 SERAs award for promoting gender equality

For its consistency in promoting gender equality, Nigeria’s most innovative and youth-friendly telecommunications company, Etisalat, has yet again emerged winner of “Best Company in the Promotion of Gender Equality” at the 2016 SERAs awards held in Lagos recently.

Etisalat beat other top corporate giants to win the category award for the second consecutive time back to back having won the same award last year.

According to SERAs’ panel of judges comprising eminent persons from across the private and public sectors, the award was in acknowledgement of Etisalat’s innovative education development initiatives targeted at empowering the girlchild.

Speaking after receiving the award, Director, Regulatory and Corporate Social Responsibility, Etisalat Nigeria, Ikenna Ikeme, expressed his delight at the recognition of the company’s laudable investment in the advancement of the girlchild in Nigeria.

“We are more than delighted that our innovative CSR initiatives are impacting lives of Nigerians in many positive ways. At Etisalat we are passionate about making life easier for our customers and members of the communities where we do business; this is why we focus on three strategic areas of interventions: education, health and environment”, he said.

Ikeme reiterated Etisalat’s commitment to Nigeria through effective partnership with relevant stakeholders and through the roll-out of more innovative solutions that will impact positively on the overall development of the country.

“Etisalat has numerous interventions focused on the areas of education, health and environment. The Etisalat Career Counselling programme held in Government Girls College, Dala, Kano State is an example of Etisalat’s contribution to reverse the twin problem of low enrolment of girls from the Northern Nigeria in school as well as lack of interest to advance their education beyond the secondary school”, he added.

It would be recalled that Etisalat won a number of awards at last year’s SERAs. These included “Best Company in Education” and “Best Company in the Promotion of Gender Equality” awards respectively for its commitment to Nigeria’s educational development through numerous initiatives including the launch of Cliqlite, an innovative technology driven educational tool that supports learning and development for children and teenagers from 8 to 15 years as well as the promotion of gender equality in Nigeria through a partnership between the telco and the foundation Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women.

The telco has also been honoured with several other significant awards such as Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative across Africa, bestowed at the inaugural Commonwealth ICT & Industry Awards, London, Top 3 Companies in Corporate Social Responsibility, Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) Awards, and Top 3 Socially Responsible Companies, Governance Advancement
Initiative for Nigeria (GAIN), among others.

Every year, the Sustainability Enterprise and Responsibility Awards also known as the Africa CSR Awards recognises the contributions of the most socially responsible organisations doing businesses in Nigeria, and Etisalat has been consistent on the winning streak.

The objective of the SERAs is to integrate principles and framework of the Global Compact, global reporting initiative, the Sustainable Development Goals and ISO 26000, and this year’s event was themed Sustainable Development Goals and the Future of Africa: Organisers as the Game Changers.
