Chamber of commerce commends FG’s decision to convoke economic summit

President Mohammad Buhari

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has applauded the Federal Government’s decision to organise an emergency economic summit, describing it as a major step in salvaging the nation’s economy.

This is contained in a statement signed and issued in Abuja on Saturday by the President of the chamber, Mr Tony Ejinkeonye.

Ejinkeonye said it was important for government to craft a well-articulated terms of reference for the summit, given the current state of the economy.

He urged the FG to take into cognisance the interest of relevant stakeholders, especially operators in the real sector, on the issues to be discussed.

The ACCI president noted that the nation’s economic growth rate had declined from an average of five per cent to three per cent in the last two years.

He attributed this to the prevailing economic crisis facing the country, adding that the nation’s economic growth was crucial to resolving the issue of exchange rates and inflation.

He stated that the summit was timely, saying it would offer economic experts the opportunity to deliberate on the current economic crunch facing the country.

The ACCI boss also said it was important for government to ensure prudent management of resources in organising the summit.

Ejinkeonye, however, said ACCI was willing to provide its facilities to assist the government in organising the summit.

He also called on all stakeholders in and outside the country to support the summit.
