No doubt, theirs was one of the much talked about society’s weddings in the country.
Just like others in their category, their November 2017 wedding was accompanied with pomp and pageantry.
But, no one could ever imagine that the wedding, which is less than a year, could end abruptly! Just like that.
For singer/actor, Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W and his wife, Adesua Etomi, who is a Nollywood actress, their enviable widely-publicised wedding might have come to end, no thanks to the Thursday May 17 ruling of a Lagos high court that marriages conducted by Federal Registry, Ikoyi is not legally binding.
For the record, the amiable couple legalised their marriage at the Registry in Ikoyi, Lagos State on November 20, 2017.
The couple, who had a lavish customary wedding on November 19, had a quiet and private ceremony at the marriage registry in Ikoyi on Monday.
They sat before an official who declared them officially married.
The few family and friends present at the Registry exploded with joy as they were proclaimed man and wife.
However, now that Justice Chuka Austine Obiozor has issued a restraining order to the Ikoyi registry from conducting marriages, saying it is unconstitutional for the FG to perform the duties of the state and local governments, by implication, the Banky W/Adesua’s wedding no longer exist.
Many celebrities would prefer an Ikoyi Registry wedding than making use of the registry in their local government area.
Meanwhile, the court judgement delivered on Suit No: FHC/L/CS/1760/16 said marriage registries in the local government and local council development areas of Lagos state are the authentic and legally-binding government divisions established to carry out such.
So, like Banky W and Adesua, if you had contracted your marriage at Ikoyi registry, consider yourself not legally married as such vow you might have exchanged is not binding.
