The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it would organise a five-week voluntary science vacation course to encourage more students to study the sciences in secondary schools.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mr Adesina Odeyemi, who made the disclosure in a statement, said the programme would begin from July 25 to Aug. 26.

Odeyemi said the course would also boost the future for self-dependence of the nation in the area of Science and Technology.

He said the course would be monitored by officials from the ministry and the six Education Districts in the state to ensure that it was organised to specification.

He said that 300 schools had been selected as centres for the programme.

The principals of the selected schools would act as the coordinators of the centres to ensure that the Unified Scheme of Work and timetable provided by the ministry were followed to ensure uniformity.

“Qualified and experienced teachers have been recruited within and nearby schools to achieve the objectives of channelling the energies of students into productive ventures during the long vacation.

“Improve students’ performance skills in sciences and sustain their interests in science subjects.

“Although, the programme is open to students in Junior Secondary I to Senior Secondary 3, the centres are expected to conduct a test for the participants at the end of the programme.

“This is in order to assess the impact of the programme and encourage the students to take the course seriously.” He said.
