Your vagina, otherwise addressed as honeypot is precious. You are expected to know how to take good care of it.
However, in the process of taking care of your vagina, here are about four tips you need to know.
• Your vagina isn’t a carpet—you should not steam clean it. In other words, you may not sit on a potty of hot water with the intention of steaming your vagina and uterus. Otherwise, you risk burning your vagina, says clinical associate professor at New York University, Dr. Raquel Dardik.
• Avoid over-the-counter vaginal creams or suppositories for yeast infections. They may lead to chemical burn inside of your vagina, says Dardik.
• Don’t insert funny stuff. You already know what’s allowed to go into your vagina: tampons, fingers, a penis, lube, birth control — and that’s about it.
• Don’t douche! When you douche, you change the normally acidic environment to a neutralised one — and inhibit your vagina from protecting itself.
Your vagina isn’t supposed to smell like a fragrance. Products that promise sweet vagina smell do exactly the wrong thing to the vaginal microbiome, making it more susceptible to infection, says assistant professor at Columbia University, Dr. Constance Young.
The bottom line: If you absolutely, positively feel the need to freshen things up, stick to the tried-and-true method of unscented soap and water — but only on the outside.
