Rising from its monthly central working committee meeting, the Christian Conscience, a non-denominational group has called on the President Mohammed Buhari-led government to take the bull by the horn and take urgent necessary steps to stop the wanton and unnecessary killings of innocent citizens across the nation.
The group cited the lingering attacks between farmers and herdsmen terrorizing communities in Benue, Plateau, and other communities in the northern part of the country and other security challenges facing the country, such as kidnapping and politically motivated violence.
Describing the killings as avoidable and unnecessary, the group is of the opinion that if necessary steps are taken, the right intelligence gathering process is utilized and proactive approaches by necessary security agencies is done, the challenges could have been nipped in the bud.
In a statement jointly released after the meeting by its national chairman, Elder Enock Ajiboso, the national Secretary, Revd. Dr Kolawole Verrals and the publicity secretary, Mr. Tunji Oguntuase, the group reiterated that a nation can only enjoy peaceful co-existence amongst its citizens with sustainable economic and agricultural growth in an environment of peace before its citizens could enjoy dividends of democracy.
“When farmers are disturbed from producing agricultural products due to insecurity and the government at all levels are not protecting them, the ultimate result will be shortage of locally produced products while unnecessary importation of food items such as rice and other stable food items that can easily be grown and produced locally are imported, thus depleting our external reserves” the group argued.
To avoid this, the group called on the PMB-led federal government to step up its activities in curtailing this menace of insecurity across the Nation.
The group congratulates the federal government in its efforts at curbing corrupt tendencies in our polity and further enjoins the government to ensure that the corruption fights cuts across all sectors of the economy regardless of whose ox are good.
The group also appreciates the developmental efforts of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in his continuous efforts of making Lagos a mega city. They further call his government to ensure that adequate payment of compensations are made to Lagosians whose properties are affected in its developmental efforts.
