The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Edgal Oluwole has cleared air on the Oro Festival which is slated for Tuesday 8th May 2018 at Ikorodu.
It could be recalled that it was widely reported in media and some online media that there would be no movement of females ( both old and young) in Ikorodu axis and the environs throughout the duration of the ‘Oro festival.
But during the recent visit of Oba of Ikorodu, His Royal Majesty Alaiyeluwa, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi Adegorushen to the office of the Commissioner, the CP called on all females residing in Ikorodu axis and the environs, to move freely and disregard the information.
He noted that the issue has generated a lot of concern from citizens in Nigeria and in Diaspora on why such tradition should still be practiced in a civilized society”.
This, he said had mounted pressure on him as the Commissioner of Police and the government in general. Therefore, to clear the air, he decided to invite the Oba of Ikorodu for clarification.
Responding to the issue, the Oba said that such news is untrue.
According to him,”Oro festival is a yearly event which has been in existence even before I was born. I am educated and enlighten and always guided.
Such law is unethical because my mother, my wife, and my children who are married are all females. There are guidelines. People are free to move to their businesses in Ikorodu”
The Commissioner further warned that whosoever that would hide under the “festival to harass any woman (both young and old, would be arrested and be charge to court.
While assuring Ikorodu residents adequate security by the police, he however called on those who were worried to go about their business”.
