Lagos Set to Develop its Water Transport Sector

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has unveiled plans by his administration to undertake the regeneration of its water transportation sector in order to impact the well being of its residents.

The Governor unveiled the plans at the first State Water Transportation Sector Roundtable held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Ambode stated that the event was held to identify new technologies that can assist in making the water transport sector more efficient while identifying steps for progressively engaging and addressing them.

He said such technologies would also be expected to contribute to the further reduction of emissions, improving the health and safety environment for commuters while also contributing to the goals of the Paris’ agreement.

Governor Ambode added that part of the objectives of the Roundtable was to draw policy experts, development partners and investors so as to give life to key transport policy targets in the 2012 – 2015 State Development Plan, noting that these policy targets will assist in the achievement of the United Nation’s SDG Goal II.

While assuring the operators, investors and stakeholders alike at the Roundtable that no one will lose his space, Governor Ambode disclosed that new ideas and infrastructures will be introduced to the water transportation sub sector to enable Lagosians move with ease and plan their time efficiently, while having a positive work – life balance.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Ladi Lawanson, said the Roundtable which is comparable to those found internationally has cross cutting effects on not just the economy but on livelihoods.

He appreciated all participants for their patience and contributions towards the development of the water transportation sub sector in the State and allayed the fear of stakeholders and investors that all issues bordering on acquisition of licenses will be addressed appropriately as the state is ready to efficiently partner with investors.
