Omo oniles risk 25 years in jail as Amosun signs anti-land grabbing bill into law

 

ABEOKUTA—Governor Ibikunle Amosun Ogun State has signed a bill into law prescribing up to 25 years imprisonment and death sentence for anyone found guilty of land grabbing.

 

Amosun gave his assent  yesterday exactly a month after the state House of Assembly passed the bill criminalising land grabbing or forceful takeover of landed property in the state.

The bill titled, “H.B. No. 03/2016 – A bill for a law to prohibit forcible entry and occupation of landed properties, violent and fraudulent conducts in relation to landed properties, armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and allied matters and for other matters incidental thereto or connected therewith.”

Shortly before the governor signed the bill into law, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi, led some of the lawmakers to present a clean copy of the bill to the governor.

 

Adekunbi noted that the land sector in the state has to be sanitised.
