Yewande Oyediran: Lawyer accused of stabbing husband to death

An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan on Friday ordered that a 28-year-old Ibadan-based female lawyer, Yewande Oyediran, accused of killing her husband on Tuesday February 2, 2016 in their matrimonial home should be remanded in prison.

The accused, who is a member of staff of Ministry of Justice, Oyo state, was alleged to have stabbed her husband, Oyelowo Oyediran, to death.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Durosaro-Tijani, remanded Yewande at Agodi Prison, pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution in the state.

Police prosecutor, Insp. Adewale Amos, had told the court that the accused caused the death of Oyelowo, 38, by stabbing him on the neck with a knife.

However, Yewande, who happens to be a Staff of Directorate of public prosecution at the Ministry of Justice, Ibadan, Oyo state, pleaded not guilty.

The charge against Yewande was that on February 2, 2016 at about 06:10am at No 30 Abidi Odan Akobo area, Ibadan in the Ibadan Magisterial District she did unlawfully cause the death of one Oyelowo Oyediran Ajanaku, 38, by stabbing him with a knife on the neck, which later resulted in his death.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Kehinde Durosaro-Tijani,who adjourned the case to 16 February 2016 for mention and ordered the accused to be remanded in Agodi Prisons.

The defence counsel, Mr. Seun Abimbola, had asked the court to allow the suspect be remanded in police custody so as to be able to reduce the truamatisation she has been going through as a result of the incident. The request was turned down.

Abimbola pressed further that he would bring a written application for the request to the court. But the court said it did not have jurisdiction to entertain such application based on the nature of the case.

However, the journalists who have been well positioned at the Black Maria to be used in conveying the suspect to Agodi Prison to take her picture were disappointed as the suspect was smuggled out of the court in a blue Primera Nissan Car purportedly owned by a lawyer.

A legal practitioner, Mr. Sina Olaniyan, described the accused as someone who has a high regards for due process of the law and of good character, adding, “But this is a test for the judiciary. It is going to be a test for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) as a whole. The members of the public are watching to see where the pendulum of justice will swing. She is still presumed innocent until she is proved otherwise”.

Another legal practitioner, Mr. Adeleke Bakare, described Yewande as a very amiable and gentle person, and a dedicated person to her job, saying, “She is somebody who fights against crime and she is always here, doing her job as a prosecutor, diligently. The person I have known that always discourages crime has now been involved in an alleged crime and it is a crime we can describe as of highest magnitude, which has highest punishment known to the law. Honestly, I am surprised”.

Before his gruesome murder, Lowo, was said to have been based in France, but had been coming home regularly since he married Yewande.
A family source, who is a brother to the deceased, said the husband was into property development and had come home in December 2015, to execute a job in Nigeria.

According to the niece of the deceased, “My uncle and his wife are based in Ibadan, and we are based in lag [Lagos]. I was in my office yesterday morning when my boss received a call from my uncle’s personal assistant that Lowo has been rushed to the hospital. I immediately alerted my mum since my dad, Lowo’s elder brother is out of the country.

“My mum rushed down from her office to my office and went directly to Ibadan with my boss to see Lowo’s state. Of course, he died less than 15 minutes he was rushed to the hospital.

“From what the landlord that took Lowo to the hospital said, Lowo and his wife had a little argument beteen the hours of 10pm-11pm over the issue of going for an official assignment in Germany and France in 2 days time with his boss and finance manager of his company. The tickets have already been purchased. The wife told the husband not to go and there was argument.

“She stabbed Lowo on the shoulders and the neighbours intervened. The dispute was resolved amicably. Lowo even took some pictures to send to his business partners in Denmark.

“Lowo went to a nearby hospital to get treated, then went back home to sleep. She stabbed him while he was sleeping.

“We want justice. She’s a lawyer, yet she took the law into her hands. Her license must be revoked. She must pay for her crimes. She would have divorced him instead of killing him if she was tired of the marriage. This Febuary will mark their 3rd year marriage anniversary. The couple does not have kids.” She said.

A tribute by some of Lowo’s friends sighted by DailyBells Nigeria on Facebook described his death as a rude shock.
“TRIBUTE TO MY BELOVED OYELOWO AJANAKU OYEDIRAN. My dear Oyediran Adelowo Ajanaku, the news of your untimely death came to me and the entire family as a rude shock.
“LOWO, you were such a wonderful brother ,a peace maker ,loving and kind to all. You were not sick for a day but you were unfortunate to marry a wicked soul who decided to stab you to death without mercy.
“We were together just last Thursday in my shop and also had a long conversation with you on Monday, a day before YEWANDE (NEE FATOKI) terminated your life. . Rest in peace beloved brother. We love u but JESUS loves u most. Feeling sad @ the moment.

Another friend, Ebony Anachebe Anderson submitted, “Jezzz! What a wicked world!! Take heart Ma. God will deal with that demon in form of a wife. Return if Possible Lowo!
