I Will Quit CNM If ….-OBJ

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria, has stated that if the newly-formed Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) decides to join partisan politics at any time, he would quit being a member of the organization.

The former president made his comments at the NUJ secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogun state, during his official registration as a member of the organization.

The DailyBells gathers that Obasanjo expressed pleasure at joining the CNM, and described the event as the commencement of a popular and grassroots association.

He stated: “I am happy to be a member of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement, which is a movement for good governance.

“This is the commencement for our popular and grassroots association.

“The membership will be free to collectively decide on whether it will become a political party and if it decides to transform itself and go into partisan politics, I will cease to be a member.”

The former president continued afterwards: “It is necessary to make it clear that this new movement does not regard itself as a third force.

“It sees itself as a popular movement that can accommodate all Nigerians irrespective of their political interest or affiliations and will propel Nigeria forward.”

Meanwhile, OBJ’s stance that the CNM is an apolitical association had left many pundits wondering what exactly he seeks to achieve with the group, considering the fact that in his now infamous letter, the ex-president had advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to re-contest in 2019.

The national coordinator of the CNM, Colonel Olagunsoye Oyinlola (rtd.), had stated earlier on Wednesday, January 31, that it would be hard to achieve something tangible without a political party.

He stated: “We’re not a political party, at least, for now.

Commenting further, Oyinlola stated, “we recognize the facts that by the dictates of the Constitution, you can only contest on the platform of a political party,” led many present to assume that the CNM would likely end up being a political party”.
