The Peoples Democratic Party this afternoon suspended its controversial national convention scheduled to hold today following police action sealing off the Sharks Stadium, venue of the convention.
At a meeting held inside the Government House, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the party extended the tenure of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee by another 12 months.
The leaders of the party were earlier prevented from leaving the Government House by security officials who mounted vigil at the entrance to the Government House.
During the meeting, the National Caretaker Chairman of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, inaugurated the National Executive Committee of the party.
Performing the inauguration, Senator Makarfi said that the National Executive Committee, NEC, include the Board, the PDP Governors, National Assembly Caucus, Board of Trustees, National Caucus, 36 State PDP chairmen and national officers of the party.
He said, in the absence of the elected National officers, the National Caretaker Committee members would be part of NEC.
The National Caretaker Committee Chairman said that the National Caretaker Committee members cease to be NEC members once national officers are elected.
At the meeting were PDP governors, National Assembly members, Board of Trustees, National Caucus of the party, 36 State PDP chairmen and national Caretaker Committee members of the party.
